De Pere soccer honored with sportsmanship award

DE PERE – The De Pere High School boys’ soccer team was honored with the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Rural Mutual Insurance Sportsmanship Award for the 2021 alternate fall season state tournament.

The Redbirds finished runners-up at the Division 1 tournament May 15, completing a 12-2-3 record for the season.

During halftime of the home varsity football game versus Ashwaubenon Sept. 10, a representative from Rural Mutual Insurance presented the soccer team with a plaque and a banner to display at the school.

This is the second time De Pere High School earned the WIAA Sportsmanship Award.

Both have come in boys’ soccer, with the other recognition in 1999 when the Redbirds competed in the Division 2 state tournament.

Award winners are determined by the conduct and sportsmanship displayed by athletes, coaches, cheer and support groups, mascots, bands and spectators.

Additional consideration is given for the effort of school administrators and chaperones to ensure support for their teams is positive and the highest ideals of sportsmanship are demonstrated.
