Green Bay school board to interview nine for vacant board seat

GREEN BAY – The Green Bay school board took a step forward in filling a vacant board seat, selecting nine candidates to interview at a brief special board meeting Monday, Feb. 15.

The finalists, vying for the seat left vacant following the resignation of former board vice president Kristina Shelton last month, were selected from an applicant pool of 24.

“Speaking for myself, I’m very pleased with the amount of interest in our school board, the interest in being a member of our school board,” said Eric Vanden Heuvel, board president. “With that though, comes the unenviable task of deciding which we will choose to interview. I do want to express our gratitude to everyone who took the time and the step to express interest, because it does take a great deal to stand up and volunteer for public service.”

Board members spent the last week reviewing all 24 applications.

As board secretary Beth Jones announced each applicant in the order their applications were received, trustees expressed their interest in interviewing them with a “yes” response.

The candidates that received the most yeses move onto the next step in the process – individual interviews.

The board originally planned to interview only eight applicants. But when a tie between the eighth and ninth candidates could not be broken, the board agreed to interview nine candidates instead.

“I’d rather have it be a long night than kick someone off,” said Trustee Andrew Becker. “Their letters are very different, and I think both valid.”

The nine candidates – Jessica Franco-Morales, Chad Dall, Laura Laitinen-Warren, Eric Hagedorn, Sarah Cruz, Josh Koch, Denise Seibert, St. Luke Blia Xang Her and Rachel Cloud – will be interviewed by the full board in open session at 5 p.m. March 1.

The interviews, following discussion and vote will all be livestreamed on YouTube.

“One seat for the number of individuals is going to be a tough decision,” Vanden Heuvel said.

The appointee will serve until April 10, 2022.
