SUAMICO — Bay Port boys’ swimmer Victor Kostov won both the 50-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly in the Pirates’ 119-49 victory Jan. 12 over Green Bay United (GBU) at the Lineville Community Pool in Suamico.
Kostov was victorious in the two-lap freestyle race by more than two and a half seconds over teammate Alec Tuttle, and his butterfly result was a personal best.
“The 50 free is actually Victor’s off event,” said Jim Schilz, Bay Port head coach. “I asked him what he wanted to swim, and he said, ‘Let’s go with this one today.’ He’s good technical wise. He had an explosive start to the race and finished the back half just as strong. When you add it all up, you have a dominant performance.”
Bay Port’s Payton Schilz and Turner Long each added two wins.
GBU’s lone individual win came in the 100 backstroke, where Mikhail Neverman outdueled Tuttle.
“Mikhail comes in with lots of talent,” said Tom Capelle, Green Bay United head coach. “We have lots of fresh faces, and he shows the guys the important skills and leadership on how to get better and take time off your races. He’s improved in one year. He comes from a great swimming family.”
In the next-to-last race, Bay Port’s Will Nicol blew away the competition in the 100 breaststroke.
“This was a good swim for Will,” said Schilz. “He’s an up-and-coming swimmer for us. He’s gaining confidence by the day. He has to fix a few things here and there, but he’s committed to becoming an all-around swimmer.”
The Pirates will be back in action Jan. 15 when they host Ashwaubenon.
