SUAMICO – The village board authorized staff Monday, Dec. 7, to bid out the Riverside Drive reconstruction project planned next year in Suamico’s Historic Downtown between Velp Avenue and Side Street.

By bidding out the project this month, Public Works Director Andy Smits said the village will hopefully receive favorable price quotes and get on contractors’ schedules before other projects in the area are released.

Smits said the reconstruction project, located in Tax Incremental Financing District No. 2, will have a 6-foot-wide concrete sidewalk on the south side for safely routing pedestrians through the area.

Board members agreed with his recommendation to have decorative lights 20 feet high with a single mast, and they also favored a herringbone design for a crosswalk.

The board decided against rehabbing a train bridge for the project, given the potential cost and possible long-term maintenance liability.

Deposit vault

To collect absentee ballots dropped off outside the village hall next year, the board approved spending $951 to purchase a heavy duty outdoor deposit vault.

Board members favored the deposit vault over an option where someone could drop off an absentee ballot after hours and the ballot would drop inside the building.

Village Administrator Alex Kaker said the drop-box slot was estimated at $2,500.

Special election

To hold a special election next year to replace former State Rep. John Nygren, who resigned last week, the board allocated $2,000.

Though the majority of the special election cost would be covered by the state, Deputy Clerk Melissa Hongisto recommended having $2,000 available to ensure mailing expenses could be paid for in the event the special election didn’t coincide with when the regular spring elections will be held next year.

Legal services

The board approved legal services agreements with Town Counsel Law & Litigation to be solely the village’s general legal counsel for $165 an hour and Umentum & Kimps to remain as the village’s municipal prosecutor for $175 an hour.

Kaker said the agreement with Town Counsel will be $60 less an hour than the rate previously charged by Umentum & Kimps.
