SEYMOUR ─ Wyatt “Kaz” Kaczrowski not only is a three-time WIAA state qualifier on the wrestling mat, but he’s also finished on the podium each season.

Kaczrowski has wrestled at the state tournament in the 113-pound weight class the last three seasons.

During his freshman year, he placed fifth.

In his sophomore season, Kaczrowski finished runner-up.

“I still think about that (2-1) loss as a sophomore,” he said. “It’s my most memorable sports moment, but it was also extremely disappointing. It fuels me to work harder and try for that title.”

Kaczrowski placed third last year.

“It’s been my goal to win a state title since I entered high school, so this season is my last shot,” he said. “I’ll give it everything I’ve got.”

Wyatt, the son of Tami and Todd Kaczrowski, said he’s simply happy to be wrestling this year because of the unknowns of COVID-19.

“Many wrestlers aren’t able to wrestle because COVID-19 shut down their schools,” said Kaczrowski, who describes himself as hard-working, determined and outgoing. “It stinks wearing a mask, but I’ll deal with it if it means being able to wrestle.”

Seymour has used a blended approach with its learning and hasn’t had any shutdowns so far due to COVID-19.

Many wrestlers face challenges dealing with maintaining their weight, but Kaczrowski isn’t one of them.

“I don’t think about it too much,” he said. “This year, it’s not too bad. My normal out-of-season weight is about 130, so I’m currently wrestling at 126. With practice, working hard and running on the side, I’ll easily be able to get to 120 by the time regionals roll around. You naturally grow taller and stronger each year, so you do have to be aware of it.”

Seymour’s head coach is Mark Schmoll.

“It’s fun, and he’s a great coach,” said Kaczrowski. “He works well with the kids and is a good recruiter. We don’t have high numbers in the program, so he helps with getting our numbers up.”

Kaczrowski, who also ran varsity cross country all four years at Seymour, will be attending Augsburg University in Minneapolis, which has won 13 NCAA Division III national championships.

“Hopefully, I’ll be competing at 125 next year at Augsburg,” said Kaczrowski. “I’ll be studying business management.”

Kaczrowski’s younger brother, Walker, also wrestles on the team.

He also has an older brother, Shawn, who lives in South Carolina.

“Every year, we travel to South Carolina to visit my brother, and we spend a week on the beach,” Kaczrowski said.

His dad is from Seymour and wrestled in high school, while his mom is from Manitowoc.

Kaczrowski, who said he’d like to visit New York City, San Francisco and Atlanta someday, enjoys hunting, cars, running, exercise and lifting weights.

“My dream car is a 1969 Chevy Camaro,” he said.

He also likes eggs and toast, cookies and cream ice cream, the month of January, Christmas, the phone app Spotify and the restaurant Olive Garden.
