Local golfers named academic all-state

BROWN COUNTY – The Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin (GCAW) recently announced the academic all-state honorees for the 2020 season.

Notre Dame Academy’s Grace Durkin, Emily Noble, Emma Wolf and Anna Gruesen all received high honors, while Lily Balison and Belle Mae Williams both received honors.

West De Pere’s Katie Waukau and Ally Reis also received high honors.

Students are nominated by GCAW member coaches if they meet the following criteria: A cumulative grade-point average (GPS) of at least 3.25; participation in at least 75 percent of their team’s varsity matches; and are in grades 10-12.

A total of 330 girls from 81 high schools were honored this year for maintaining high academic standards in the classroom while competing in varsity golf.

The average cumulative GPA of this year’s honorees was 3.842.

The GCAW was formed by high school golf coaches in 1986 to help build Wisconsin’s reputation for developing quality junior players by promoting golf in schools and communities.

Besides honoring both boys and girls who succeed as student-athletes, the association also selects an annual all-state team for boys and girls based on their playing ability.

Durkin was selected third-team all-state in Division 1, while Green Bay NEW Lutheran’s Faith Flynn received honorable mention status in Division 2.

An academic team award honoring high school teams with the highest cumulative GPA will be announced next March.
