Speed limit reduced on St. Francis Park Drive in Suamico

By Press Times Staff

SUAMICO – The village board agreed Sept. 21 to lower the speed limit on St. Francis Park Drive from 35 to 25 mph.

Residents in the area overwhelmingly favored the lower speed limit, which was also recommended by the village’s Health and Safety Committee.

Public Works Director Andy Smits said the roadway is curvy with limited sight distances.

“I don’t know that (there are) any safe conditions you can really drive 35 mph and maintain that through the whole corridor,” he said. “We believe going down to the 25 mph speed zone is a good suggestion for this section of roadway, and it’s supported by the committee and staff.”

St. Francis Park Drive, located in the northern section of the village, is six-tenths of a mile in length with no sidewalks, curbs or shoulders and serves as a connector with Lost Trail and Elmwood Road.

Though reducing the speed limit to 25 mph could lead to golf carts being allowed on the road with permits, residents on hand for the meeting said they are opposed to allowing them there.

Fire Station No. 1

After meeting in closed session, the board took no action on proposals the village received for purchasing the existing Fire State No. 1 property.

Village Administrator Alex Kaker said the village received multiple proposals for the property, which will be vacated next year upon completion of the new Fire Station No. 1.

Kaker said the board will be considering the possible purchase of the existing Fire Station No. 1 site in the future.
