SUAMICO – Peyton Nichols is a senior at Bay Port High School on the boys’ soccer team.

A three-year varsity player, Peyton, the son of John and Jessica Nichols, plans to attend the University of Hartford, a Division I school in Connecticut after graduation to play soccer and study math/business.

“Hartford was interested in me for a while, and they have a great soccer program,” said Nichols. “They are also solid academically – overall, it’s a perfect fit for me. I had a few other schools contact me, but Hartford stood out.”

Nichols has two younger sisters – one is a sophomore at Bay Port and the other a fourth-grader – who play soccer, and both of his parents grew up in the area.

“My dad played soccer and was the kicker on the football team at Pulaski in high school,” said Nichols, who describes himself as athletic, hard-working and determined.

His most memorable sports moment occurred three years ago in Indiana.

“Even though we lost, going to the national championship with my club soccer team was cool,” Nichols said. “It was fun to be on the national stage with so many other great teams.”

His most embarrassing moment led to an own-goal.

“Last season playing for Bay Port, a ball was passed back to our goalie, and I was running toward him,” he said. “The goalie kicked it, and it bounced off my face and went into our own goal. It was pretty embarrassing.”

Nichols plays for the Pirates under Head Coach Travis Herber.

“Coach is intense,” he said. “He always makes sure we are staying competitive, even in practice. That’s good for our team, and it carries over to the games – he’s not quiet. I like him as a coach. Hopefully, we can play next spring and have a good season.”

Bay Port’s fall athletics were moved to the alternate season next spring because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s disappointing we aren’t playing now, but we have to deal with it,” he said.

Nichols, a midfielder at Bay Port, will play defense at Hartford.

“My strength as a player is my vision for the game,” he said. “I tend to make the right decisions many times and have lots of assists. On my club team (FC Wisconsin in Milwaukee), I play defense.”

Nichols, a left-footed kicker, said he needs to become more proficient with his opposite foot.

“Most people don’t know I kick with my left foot,” he said. “You need to use both in soccer. I write left-handed as well.”

Nichols said Bay Port “is a great school” and he will miss his friends when he leaves.

“I’ll miss the soccer and teachers as well,” he said.

Nichols also likes soccer player Kylian Mbappe, steak, cookies and cream ice cream, Snapchat, the restaurant Texas Roadhouse, the month of June, the color blue and dogs.
