Notre Dame Academy cancels first two football games

By Press Times Staff

GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Notre Dame football team canceled its first two games of the season because of a positive COVID-19 case.

The school announced Thursday, Sept. 24, its games at Kaukauna Sept. 25 and home against Martin Luther Oct. 2 have been canceled.

The third game against West De Pere Oct. 9 has been postponed for now.

“First and foremost, we have to look out for the safety of our students,” Notre Dame Athletic Director Matt Koenig said in a released statement. “It’s difficult for the team. COVID-19 has created so much uncertainty in everyone’s lives, and, unfortunately, we have to go through this. We’re going to continue to take all the precautions and safety measures with this situation and look forward to when our varsity football team can return to competing. Our student-athletes have already overcome lots of adversity, and I couldn’t be prouder of how they continue to overcome it.”

Because the Tritons are currently down to five games and possibly four if the West De Pere contest gets canceled, the school could decide to move its season to the spring.

The rest of the area Fox River Classic Conference teams – Ashwaubenon, Bay Port, De Pere, Green Bay East, Green Bay Preble, Green Bay Southwest, Green Bay West and Pulaski – voted to play their games next spring.

Football teams can’t play more than 50 percent of their fall schedule and still be eligible to play a prorated amount of games in the alternate spring season.

In another change, Menasha also had a positive COVID-19 case, so West De Pere will host Hortonville Sept. 25 instead of Menasha.
