DE PERE — Abby Darrow stepped into a No. 4 singles position for the West De Pere girls’ tennis team after one of its regular rotation players was out of the lineup.

Darrow recorded the decisive victory in the Phantoms’ 4-3 win over Fox Valley Lutheran Sept. 22 in a Bay Conference matchup at West De Pere High School.

With the victory, the Phantoms moved to 6-1 on the season.

They have won 37 of their 49 individual matches contested.

“I’ve been impressed with the girls’ start,” said Rachel Benn, West De Pere head coach. “Everyone has worked hard and wants what’s best for the team.”

After the Phantoms’ No. 1 doubles team of Josie Johnson and Lorraine Qui rallied from a set down to defeat the Foxes in three sets, the team score was even, with West De Pere getting victories at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles.

It came down to the Darrow/Jessica Griepentrog match to determine the outcome.

Darrow came up with the bigger shots when it mattered most in her 6-3, 6-4 victory on court No. 3.

“Abby jumped into singles today and adjusted quickly,” added Benn. “She had played five previous doubles matches. We needed her, and she came up big.”
