Ben Hampton is a 2020 graduate of West De Pere High School and was a member of the baseball team.

As a junior, he helped lead the Phantoms to the state tournament at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton.

Hampton will be heading to Division I West Virginia University in August on a baseball scholarship.

Talk about signing with the Mountaineers and what it means to you.

“The recruiting process started later for me than other kids. When I received my offer from West Virginia and took my visit, I knew it was where I wanted to go. The campus and coaches were great, and they made me feel like I was at home. The number of resources they have to make their players better is second-to-none.”

Talk about your family and how they supported you through the recruiting process.

“They were there to support me every step of the way. I am grateful for them and all the help they provided in making my dreams a reality.”

What’s your most embarrassing baseball moment?

“About three years ago in a fall league, I was playing my younger brother Josh’s team, and it was a 2-2 count. He threw me a 45-mph change-up, and I swung so hard I almost fell over. I struck out in front of my friends and family. I knew I was going to hear it from him for years.”

If you could be somebody for a day, who would it be?

“Major League Baseball pitcher Justin Verlander. He’s living the dream.”

On Saturday mornings, I can be found …

“Sleeping in or watching college sports with my dad.”

Where do you plan to live after college?

“How my baseball career turns out will make an impact on where I live.”

What three words describe you?

“Competitive, friendly, hard-working.”

If you didn’t play baseball, what other sport could you have excelled in?

“Basketball. Once I reached high school, I started to play only baseball and focus on getting stronger in the offseason instead of hoops.”

How do you want to be remembered at West De Pere?

“As a good person and athlete and a respectful student in the classroom.”

Favorite sound of fall?

“Leaves falling while walking through the woods.

What’s something on your bucket list?

“Travel all over the United States and visit every MLB stadium.”

Favorite MLB player?

“Walker Buehler. I love the way he pitches and handles himself on the mound.”

Biggest sports achievement?

“Making it as a team to state and being named first-team, all-state.”

What two cities would you like to visit?

“Los Angeles and Paris.”

Where do you see yourself in 30 years?

“I hope to be retired and living somewhere warm.”

What’s one thing you’ve done to help others?

“Shovel for my grandparents and neighbors every winter.”
