DE PERE – West De Pere senior Genesis Eggart is a member of the softball team.

A college commit to Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan, Eggart said she didn’t see herself going to a Division II school.

“It was always my dream to play Division I college softball,” she said. “I could have, but I realized the size of the school didn’t matter when I visited Grand Valley. It’s a perfect fit for me. I fell in love with the campus and winning culture – the school has a tight-knit sports community.”

Four of her five college offers were from Division I schools.

The daughter of Scott and Lourain Eggart, she plans to study nursing and Spanish at Grand Valley.

“I’ve been staying active and trying to pitch to my dad,” Genesis said of schools not being in session due to COVID-19. “There comes a point in time where it’s tough for him. With my dad being the athletic director at West De Pere, he’s trying to stay positive for all of us. I hope we can get back to playing games soon.”

Eggart, who is nicknamed Gio, Geno, G and General, also played volleyball and basketball during her sophomore year and basketball only her junior year.

“I think had I stuck with volleyball, I could have been pretty good,” she said. “I had some pretty natural talent. I got mononucleosis my senior year and didn’t get to play basketball.”

Eggart and West De Pere head coach Tom Zimdars helped lead the Phantoms to the sectional final game last season against Pulaski before falling 5-2.

“Coach is intense,” said Eggart, who throws about 62 mph. “I’ve never met a coach who wants to win more than he does. He takes losses to heart, and it’s fun playing for him. I have an intense love and passion for the game, too, and when you have a coach who can match that, it’s a special thing.”

Eggart’s dad was the athletic director at New London before West De Pere, and he started his daughter on the path toward a successful softball career.

“My dad bought me a plastic ball and bat, and we’d play around in the house,” she said. “He noticed my arm was pretty strong, so that’s when I got started with a pitching coach. With him being the athletic director at New London, I was always around sports growing up.”

Eggart fired a no-hitter last season against Manitowoc Lincoln and has the school record for career strikeouts at West De Pere.

“I’m hoping to add to my 517 career strikeouts,” said Eggart, who describes herself as loyal, stubborn, goofy and a leader. “Last year during a game, I was one strikeout away from breaking the record, and my mom gave everybody confetti and blow-poppers. We 10-run ruled the opposition, so the game ended early without me breaking the record.”

Her dad is from the La Crosse area and played football in high school, while her mom is from Puerto Rico and didn’t play sports.

“I also have an 11-year-old brother named Brady who plays basketball and football,” Eggart said. “My mom is my biggest supporter.”

Eggart said her grandma gave her the name Genesis.

“My mom and grandma are very religious,” she said. “My grandma’s favorite book of the Bible is Genesis, which means the beginning.”

Besides softball, Eggart enjoys writing, singing, cookies and cream ice cream, rice and beans, dogs, the color black, the television show “New Girl” and Snickers candy bars.
