St. Norbert College men’s basketball, hockey teams move on

DE PERE – The St. Norbert College men’s basketball and hockey teams each saw their seasons continue into March.

Basketball

The Green Knights saw a seven-point halftime lead disappear in an 84-71 loss to Ripon College in the championship game of the Midwest Conference Tournament Feb. 29.

Despite the loss, St. Norbert (23-4) still earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Division III National Tournament and will face the University of St. Thomas (24-3) in a first-round game Friday, March 6, in Platteville at 5 p.m.

If the Green Knights win their first game, Saturday’s second-round game is set for 7 p.m. against the winner of UW-Platteville (22-4) and Concordia University Wisconsin (19-9).

St. Norbert is making its seventh NCAA Division III Tournament appearance in 11 years and its ninth overall.

The Green Knights have won 23 of their last 25 games after winning the Midwest Conference regulars-season championship with a 17-1 record.

St. Norbert, which advanced to the Sweet 16 in its last NCAA appearance in 2016, is 5-8 all-time in the tournament.

Hockey

The Green Knights advanced to the championship game of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Playoffs for the 18th time in 19 years with a 2-0 win over Marian University Feb. 28.

The semifinal game of the Harris Cup Playoffs against the Sabres took place at the Blue Line Family Ice Center in Fond du Lac.

Marian swept the Green Knights earlier this season in a two-game series.

Dominick Sacco and Brendan Aird scored the goals for St. Norbert, which got 26 saves in net from goaltender Colby Entz.

St. Norbert (17-9-2) will face Adrian College Saturday, March 7, in Adrian, Michigan, for the Harris Cup championship and the automatic bid into the NCAA Division III National Tournament.

It’s the sixth consecutive year St. Norbert and Adrian are meeting for the Harris Cup title.
