CABLE – The Ashwaubenon Nordic Ski Team boys topped the podium at the State Nordic High School Championships Feb. 8-9 in Cable for the second consecutive year.

Bay Port’s Ryan Thieme and Ashwaubenon’s Daniel Huhtala and Kevin Johnson posted top-10 times on Saturday in the 6.6-kilometer classic leg.

The trio maintained their two-point team lead over Lakeland Nordic in Sunday’s freestyle pursuit on a two-loop course on the Birkie Trail.

Thieme was the top finisher on Saturday but lost seconds in the freestyle to finish runner-up overall in 32:51.5.

Huhtala was fifth both days.

With a fast freestyle leg, Johnson inched up a spot to ninth on the second day to secure the team victory.

Bay Port sophomore Grant Rocheleau improved to 14th and Notre Dame Academy freshman Joseph Stumpf to 37th.

Senior Alex Lukens and junior Mason Vinoski, both from Ashwaubenon, slipped to 23rd and 88th, respectively.

Wrightstown sophomore Nick Swanson finished 99th.

First-year skier Jonathan Hanson, a freshman from Pulaski, completed the freestyle leg to finish 90th.

The final pursuit standings saw 131 boys compete.

Junior Kaitlyn Behm (Ashwaubenon) finished 26th from a field of 116 in the girls’ pursuit race.

Of 103 competitors, Parkview’s Sam Sharp was 44th in the middle school competition.
