Bay Port wins fifth consecutive conference title

SUAMICO – Bay Port High School won its fifth consecutive Fox River Classic Conference swimming and diving title Feb. 8 at the Lineville Community Pool in Suamico.

The Pirates’ 511 points outdistanced second-place Sheboygan North by 76 points.

Locally, Green Bay United (third – 416), Ashwaubenon (fourth – 314) and Pulaski (fifth – 270) also competed in the seven-team event.

“The team overcame a few adversities this season, and Coach Jason Martin and I are proud of how the guys remained positive and focused on their goals,” said Bay Port head coach Steve Jeffers. “We are happy with the culture we have with this group and are looking forward to seeing them perform in the next week or two.”

GBU’s Kaiser Neverman, a Division I commit to the University of Minnesota, shattered the pool and conference record in the 200 individual medley (1:55.02).

Neverman, who broke his own FRCC record by more than three seconds, beat second-place finisher Victor Kostov (Bay Port) by more than five seconds (2:00.08).

Neverman also broke his own pool record in the 100 butterfly (49.68), beating Keaton Spindler’s (Bay Port) second-place time (53.57) by almost four seconds.

Bay Port’s individual winners included Payton Schilz (200-yard freestyle – 1:49.19), Kyle Zerbel (100 freestyle – 48.52 – pool record) and Griffin Hawley (100 breaststroke – 1:02.9).

The Pirates won with their depth.

Other top finishes for Bay Port included the 200 medley relay team (Kostov, Hawley, Spindler, Zerbel – 1:39.82, second), Hawley in the 50 freestyle (21.90, second), Spindler in the 50 freestyle (21.98, third) and 100 butterfly (53.57, second), Schilz in the 100 freestyle (49.98, third), Asa Sadowsky in the 500 freestyle (5:07.1, third), Kostov in the 100 backstroke (54.62, second), Zerbel in the 100 backstroke (55.79, third) and the 400 freestyle relay (Kostov, Sadowsky, Alec Tuttle, Schilz – 3:30.84, third).

Pulaski’s Spencer Van Donsel won the 1-meter diving competition (296.85).

Pulaski teammates Mason Trinh (258.4) and Logan Roberts (187.3) finished second and fourth, respectively, in the same event.

Ashwaubenon got second-place finishes from Jackson Hodek in the 500 freestyle (4:58.02) and Joe Steffel in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.85).

GBU’s 200 medley relay team (Mikhail Neverman, Macoy Socha, K. Neverman, Riley Komp) set a pool-record time (1:39.81) in winning the event.

GBU’s 400 freestyle relay team (Connor Howe, Zach Karnz, Komp, K. Neverman) also set a pool record in 3:20.21.

Lastly, Bay Port’s 200 freestyle relay team (Hawley, Zerbel, Schilz, Spindler) won the event with a pool- and conference-record time of 1:28.31.

Bay Port, GBU and Pulaski will compete in the Division 1 Neenah Sectional Feb. 14-15, while Division 2 Ashwaubenon will travel to Plymouth.

The state meet is Feb. 21-22 at the UW-Madison Natatorium.
