PULASKI – The Bay Port wrestling team picked up an important Fox River Classic Conference team victory over Pulaski, but this night belonged to Austin Heim.

Heim, who also doubled as the Pirates’ placekicker last football season, won his 100th career match in Bay Port’s 34-26 win Jan. 23 at Pulaski High School.

“It’s been a goal of mine to get to 100,” said Heim, who beat Mitchell Kitzman with a 7-5 decision in the 145-pound weight class. “I felt a little pressure – a bunch of my family and friends were here. It felt awesome to beat Pulaski. It gives us momentum heading into the postseason.”

The Pirates (4-1 FRCC) bounced back after a loss Jan. 16 to De Pere (5-0), who remained unbeaten in the FRCC with a 77-6 win over Sheboygan North.

The Red Raiders (4-1 FRCC) lost their first conference match.

“Any win is a good win, especially against a strong rival like Pulaski,” said Bay Port head coach Brad Shefchik. “Pulaski has a young team this year – kids we weren’t familiar with, so it was hard to know what to expect. There were a few close matches, but most had one guy control one way or the other.”

Shefchik said lots of his wrestlers did a nice job on the evening, but he singled out the senior Heim.

“I’m sure Austin felt a little pressure, so for him to wrestle a tough kid and record his 100th career win was good,” Shefchik said.

Pulaski jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Bay Port’s Tristan Warzynski got the Pirates on the board with a 10-0 major decision over Ryan Frewerd at 120.

After Alex Stoychoff won via forfeit for Pulaski at 126, the Red Raiders took a 10-4 lead.

With Pulaski up 14-4 after the 132-pound match, the Pirates won the next four matches to jump ahead 22-14.

Jacob Ward got a pin at 138, Heim recorded his victory, Chandler Stordeur also got a pin at 152 and Colton Berna closed the run with a 10-5 decision over Trenton Gibbons at 160.

Bay Port’s Drake Anderson recorded a pin at 195, and heavyweight Max Meeuwsen won via forfeit.

Pulaski’s Ethan Eggert (106), Jadin Lemke (170), Mason Wells (182) and Aaron Hawpetoss (220) all won by decision.

Brady Gille (132) and Ashton Kapla (113) also both won by major decision for the Red Raiders.
