ASHWAUBENON — The Bay Port wrestling team continued its winning ways by defeating Ashwaubenon 45-21 in a Fox River Classic Conference dual Jan. 9 at Ashwaubenon High School.
“Ashwaubenon has a hammer of a line-up starting with those mid-weights,” said Bay Port head coach Brad Shefchik. “We tried to minimize the damage, and I thought our guys did a good job of not giving up six points. We picked up big wins at 152 and 182 to give us a lift moving toward the heavyweight classification and beyond.”
With the Jaguars up 9-6 after four matches, Jordan Vandehei and Matthew Grzybowski hooked up in a good match.
Ashwaubenon’s Vandehei grabbed a 1-0 lead through two periods, but Grzybowski was able to garner a late escape to put the match into overtime.
Thirty seconds into the extra session, Grzybowski, who was also a standout running back on the Pirates’ football team, was able to take Vandehei down for the win.
“It was a tough match,” said Grzybowski. “It means the world to me and my teammates to get a rivalry win like this.”
The Pirates were able to carry the momentum to 195, where Trevor Nys got a pin.
The Jaguars took two forfeits in back-to-back matches to hand Bay Port 12 additional points.
“It’s tough when you give a quality team in Bay Port freebies in the middle part of the match,” said Ashwaubenon head coach Jody VanLaanen. “We had our chances to put points on the board early, but we have to get healthy moving forward.”
