DE PERE – The beat goes on for the Bay Port girls’ basketball team.

Behind a strong performance from their bench, the Pirates remained unbeaten with a convincing 71-48 Fox River Classic Conference road victory over De Pere Jan. 7.

Bay Port, the No. 1-ranked Division 1 team in the state, received 20 points from its bench, with nine different players finding the scoring column.

“Our defense feeds our offense,” said Bay Port head coach Kati Coleman, whose team played its fifth consecutive game without Emma Nagel, who is out for the year with a knee injury. “All 13 players on the team need to step up. Emma gave us 10 points and 10 rebounds a game, so our players need to absorb what we’ve lost.”

Reserves Kyla Hendricks (7), Sophie Vandeyacht (7), Katherine Kitslaar (4) and Mollie Krueger (2) were strong offensively, but it was Bay Port’s defense which keyed the victory.

“Our bench has been stepping up,” Coleman said. “We will need them down the stretch – I’m happy with how they are progressing.”

With the Pirates (10-0 overall, 6-0 FRCC) leading 13-9 early in the game, they went on a 16-4 run to seize control.

Up 53-38 halfway through the second half, Bay Port ended the game on an 18-10 spurt to win going away.

Emma Krueger and McKenzie Johnson scored 16 and 14 points, respectively, to lead the Pirates.

The duo combined for six made three-pointers.

“Defense is our motto,” said senior Alaina Abel, who contributed eight points. “That’s how we win games. De Pere has a good offense. Our goal was to keep them under 40 points. Our senior class is experienced, but the underclassmen are stepping up in their roles.”

Division I recruit Jordan Meulemans led De Pere (5-4, 3-3) with 21 points.

The Pirates will entertain Notre Dame Academy (8-2, 6-0) Friday, Jan. 10, in a key FRCC matchup.

“Notre Dame is a tough team,” Coleman said. “They were like us a few years ago with their freshmen, who are now juniors. I expect a tough game Friday night.”
