2019 Press Times Sports Year in Review

BROWN COUNTY – 2019 was a banner year for sports in the Green Bay area.

Here are the top-10 most-viewed stories from this past year on The Press Times website.

Drastic weight loss: Josh Robak, a 2019 Bay Port graduate, weighed 313 pounds 10 months ago but has lost a staggering 145 pounds to his current 168 pounds.

Through diet, exercise and discipline, Robak has lost nearly half his body weight in less than a year.

Ingold fitting in with Raiders: Alec Ingold, a 2015 Bay Port graduate, went undrafted in the 2019 NFL draft, but the Oakland Raiders fullback is now a Pro Bowl alternate.

Ingold came to Lambeau Field Oct. 20, a 42-24 Green Bay victory.

Bay Port doubles up Marquette: The Pirates, the WIAA Division I state runner-up, beat the Hilltoppers in a Level 3 playoff game at Bay Port High School Nov. 8, 56-28.

The Pirates beat Kimberly the following week, 42-28, before falling to Muskego in the state finals, 21-10.

Hornets sting defending state champs: The Green Bay Preble girls’ soccer team recorded a 2-0 conference victory on the road over Notre Dame Academy April 16.

Lily Sinkler scored both goals for the Hornets.

The Tritons won the 2018 WIAA Division 3 state title.

Appleton playing in NHL: Mason Appleton, a 2014 Notre Dame Academy graduate, is currently a member of the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets.

Appleton made his NHL debut Dec. 1, 2018, and scored his first NHL goal 19 days later.

In 50 career NHL games, Appleton has recorded three goals and eight assists.

Ashwaubenon hires new football coach: After long-time head coach Mark Jonas stepped down Nov. 9, 2018, Ashwaubenon hired Brian Ryczkowski as its head coach earlier this year.

The Jaguars began the 2019 season 6-0 and finished 7-3.

Ashwaubenon has made 22 consecutive trips to the WIAA playoffs.

Trio honors fallen coaches: 2019 Bay Port graduates Gabe Walker, Cody Lindquist and Dylan Grosskreutz participated in the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association All-Star game in Oshkosh July 20.

The trio played in honor of fallen Bay Port coaches Eric “Lefty” LeFevre and James LaBlonde, both who passed away during the past two years.

The three helped lead the North to a 19-11 victory over the South.

Schroeder duo thriving at Ashwaubenon: Bill Schroder was an accomplished receiver in the NFL who caught passes from former Packers quarterback Brett Favre.

Bill is now an assistant coach with the Ashwaubenon football team.

His son, Luke Schroeder, also a receiver, caught 29 catches for 557 yards with nine receiving touchdowns this past season.

Preble baseball returns to state: The Hornets returned to the WIAA Division 1 state baseball tournament for the fourth consecutive season.

With two of the best players in the state in Max Wagner and Ryan Stefiuk, Preble could make another run in 2020.

The Hornets fell to Burlington in the state quarterfinals at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute June 11, 3-0.

Eggart tosses no-hitter: Genesis Eggart, daughter of West De Pere athletic director Scott Eggart, tossed a no-hitter against Manitowoc March 29.

The Phantoms won the 5-0 game behind 16 strikeouts from Eggart.
