DE PERE – The De Pere wrestling team posted a 54-27 victory over West De Pere in a non-conference match at De Pere High School Dec. 5.
The Redbirds jumped out to a 24-0 lead and never looked book.
“I was our first dual of the season, and we’ve got a long way to go,” said De Pere head coach Matt Kincade. “West De Pere is a tough team. Coach Winch does a good job of getting his guys ready and we knew they were going to be tough. I’m proud of the effort tonight. There were some early mistakes we need to clean up, but I thought our guys came out and battled. Our motto is to compete and to be better tomorrow than we are today. I think we did that. I’m really proud of our team.”
West De Pere was hampered by three forfeits on the night.
“So far this season, it’s almost like we have two rooms,” said West De Pere head coach Nick Winch. “We have a handful of experienced wrestlers who I lean on, and then we have quite a few who are very inexperienced – first or second year wrestlers. It’s fun every day getting to work with two groups, and it’s challenging in different ways. Everyone is growing and getting better. I feel good about the team going forward. I’m hoping my core group of guys who have lots of experience can bring up the rest of the group and show them the way.”
The teams combined for eight pins on the night – six by De Pere and two by West De Pere.
