Gretchen Farrell is a senior at Green Bay East High School.

She was a part of the volleyball team which finished 15-11 and second in the Bay Conference.

If her talents were endless, she said she would play professional volleyball and open her own restaurant.

What was your leadership style on the volleyball team?

“Having seven seniors on the team made us work together as leaders. Our team did not have captains. Our coaches believed everyone should take on that role at some point in the season. I tried to think of team-bonding ideas and include everyone on the team. I truly believe our team played as one.”

Talk about the rivalry with Green Bay West.

“East and West have always been rivals, and we do not have an option but to win against West. They have some strong players, but being rivals made us want to win that much more. We always performed at a high level against them.”

Talk about how difficult your position was.

“Being the setter was hard at because you were responsible for making the pass look good and setting the hitter up for the play. I put a lot of pressure on myself to learn and try new things. I tried to work on my defensive and offensive game. Being 5-foot-4, I typically lost on an overpass and got spiked at. Setting my teammates up was the best feeling.”

What was your most embarrassing volleyball moment?

“At my very first club tournament, my teammate served and hit me right in the face. I cried the rest of the game while continuing to play.”

What was your most memorable moment?

“My freshmen year, we were playing Preble. I dove for the ball and my teammate set it back to me. I was still on the ground and managed to hit it over for a kill.”

What was your favorite thing about playing for Coach Kieffer?

“She knows what it feels like to be the underdog, so she was our team’s greatest supporter. I know she always believed in us and knew we were capable of beating any team we were up against.”

Do you have any siblings? What is your favorite thing to do with your family?

“I have an older sister named Hannah who is 21 and an older brother Bennett who is 19. I have a dog named Bronson as well. My favorite thing to do with my family is to go on vacation somewhere warm.”

Talk about a teacher that has made an impact on you.

“Mr. Arts because he showed me how interesting chemistry is and made me love it.”

Skiing or chilling on the beach?

“Chilling on the beach.”

When I don’t have school or volleyball practice on a Sunday, I can be found …

“Going to brunch and then to goodwill to thrift with my friends.”

What are your college aspirations?

“I want to attend UW-Madison and major in dietetics.”

Car or truck?

“Car.”

What would your dream job be once you graduate?

“I want to be a dietician, but I also love to cook, so probably a chef.”

What are your hobbies?

“Playing volleyball, cooking, shopping.”

What is your favorite type of music?

“Pop.”

What three words describe you?

“Organized, hard-working, funny.”

What is your favorite trip ever taken?

“Mexico for New Years and for my sister’s 21st birthday last year.”

New York or Los Angeles?

“New York.”

When you retire and reflect back, what are two things you will have hoped to accomplish?

“Own a small restaurant/company which helps make people healthy and happy and travel the world.”
