KOHLER—For the first time in school history, the Ashwaubenon girl’s tennis team qualified for team state by edging out the De Pere Redbirds 47-43, October 10, at the Sports Core Tennis Facility.

“We are just so grateful how everything turned out,” said Raelynn Wingert, Ashwaubenon assistant coach. “De Pere is a great team and we knew it would be a battle throughout the day.”

Redbird’s No. 1 singles player Norah Balthazor.

Both teams started the day with 24 points, and through the first round of play were deadlocked at 36 points. Jaguars No. 2 singles player Natasha Schiegg fell down 3-0 in the final set in her first round with Manitowoc Lincoln before winning six games in a row to capture her match. No. 4 singles player Puja Patel also found herself down in the third set before mounting a comeback against Sarah Hammerton of Appleton West.

“We told the team we couldn’t look ahead to the finals,” added Wingert. “We fought through some adversity early on and fortunately came out on top to enable us to get into those matchups with De Pere.”

The Jaguars forged ahead with key victories over the Redbirds at three singles and one and two doubles to secure the Manitowoc sectional title and advance to team state in Madison (October 25-26).

Other sectional winners included Melanie Lamon (Ashwaubenon) at three singles, Lilyann Tomashek (Pulaski) at four singles and Brooke Ellestad and Mackenzie Galeazzi of Kimberly at three doubles.
