HOWARD – The village is launching a campaign for staff and residents to save lives.

Public Safety Chief Ed Janke informed the village board Monday, Sept. 9, about Stop the Bleed, a Department of Homeland Security initiative developed in response to active shooter events.

“Uncontrolled bleeding from post-traumatic injury is the leading preventable death,” Janke said.

By stopping the bleeding, Janke said it would be possible to save someone’s life.

“This initiative now goes beyond the first responder perspective and traumatic medical area and goes into the civilian perspective,” he said.

Janke said training related to hands-only CPR and stopping traumatic bleeding will be provided in the village with one-hour classes and certificates being provided.

“We will first make sure that all our village staff are trained, and then our staff will donate their time back to the community,” he said. “We’ll probably run four, five of those, maybe six of those a year, to try to get as many people as we possibly can, who not only will have the ability to deliver CPR, but also the ability to stop bleeding.”

Janke said the first training sessions for the public will be held Oct. 12, when an open house will be held at the fire station, with one-hour sessions at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
