Name: Alyssa Cayer

Nickname: Shalyss

Activity: Girls’ golf

Alyssa Cayer is a senior at West De Pere High School on the girls’ golf team.

She has successfully hit a recovery shot between two tree trunks on a local golf course.

Cayer would love to skydive after her 18th birthday and visit Iceland.

Talk about how hard it is to repeat the same swing in golf each time a shot is hit.

“It takes a lot of practice and dedication to repeat the same golf swing. Every time I approach the ball, I assess my body position and focus on making the swing the best it can be.”

What is a cause you’re passionate about?

“I’m passionate about saving youth sports, which I was made aware of through my job at Dick’s Sporting Goods. A shout out to my teammates – stay cool. Sports have played a huge role in my life in teaching me discipline and hard work. By 2020, 27 percent of US schools will not have any sports.”

What is your most embarrassing golf moment?

“While playing our conference final at Wander Springs golf course, I was looking for my ball, and I mistakenly stepped on it. I thought the embarrassment was penalty enough, but I also had to add a stroke for my mistake.”

If you could be somebody for a day, who would it be?

“I would choose [PGA golfer] Brooks Koepka because he does minimal practicing and still won the PGA Championship.”

Who is a celebrity crush?

“It’s been [soccer player] David Beckham since third grade.”

What are your goals for the 2019 golf season?

“To improve my consistency on my swing, achieve first-team all-conference, go to state and make my final season the most fun yet.”

Talk about how your family has shaped you during your teen years.

“My family has inspired me to work hard, not only on the golf course but in my work and school environments as well.”

What is your favorite shot?

“The tee shot, because my drive is probably the best aspect of my game.”

Talk about a favorite teacher you’ve had.

“My French teacher, Mrs. Gutschow. She is hands-down, the sweetest and most caring teacher I’ve ever had. She has been nicknamed ‘School Mom.’”

What is one thing that other teammates or coaches don’t know about you?

“I enjoy playing cribbage. My goal is to beat my Uncle Kurt.”

What is your favorite golf course outside of Wisconsin?

“I have never golfed outside of Wisconsin, but I’d like to travel to Arizona because they have beautiful courses.”

What are your college aspirations?

“I’m hoping to attend Marquette University where I’d like to obtain a bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences. Afterward, I hope to attend optometry school.”

What are your hobbies?

“Golfing, hanging out with friends, playing card games, being on the lake, hiking and traveling.”

What three words describe you?

“Goofy, loyal, hardworking.”

What is a memory of a recent birthday you can share?

“For my 15th birthday, I went to Mexico with my mom and my brother. This was by far my favorite – except for the major sunburn after.”

Talk about two things you’re looking forward to in your final year at West De Pere.

“I’m looking forward to the football season as a senior and making more memories with my friends.”

What is your ideal foursome on the golf course if you could pick anybody in the world?

“It would include my Grandpa Bittner because he’s the reason I play golf, my favorite professional golfer, Rory McIlroy, and of course, [West De Pere teacher] Mr. Charles Brehm, who I’d embarrass on the course.”

Who do you admire and why?

“I admire my mother, because she took the time to teach me a strong work ethic and honorable values. I can always find unwavering support in her throughout any experience.”
