Voyageurs lose on late goal

ASHWAUBENON – Extra time can be pivotal in any soccer game.

It proved to be the downfall for the Green Bay Voyageurs FC in a 2-1 loss to the Kaw Valley FC Cranes Capital Credit Union Park June 20.

Kaw Valley’s Lorant Lettner scored the game winner in the 96th minute of the contest.

Jamison Yoder stopped seven shots in goal for Green Bay and Nicolau Neto made nine saves for Kaw Valley.

“It’s a tough way to lose a game,” said Green Bay head coach Brian Kamler. “It was a great ball in by them. Our defense had been pressing forward to get the win. Kaw Valley plays a lot of those diagonal balls in, and a lot of times are successful at converting those. We need to be more aware of these situations moving forward.”

The Voyageurs started the game with a ton of energy.

Just 2 minutes in, Anthony Markanich sent in a ball to newly activated Sam Thornton who punched one in past Neto for a 1-0 lead.

“Sometimes an early goal like that can be a bit of a curse,” added Kamler. “I thought we let up a bit to end the first half.”

In the 29th minute, Chase Bromstedt led a 3-on-2 attack for the Cranes and sent a ball to Ignacio Lerech, who hit the left post, preserving the one-goal lead for the Voyageurs.

As much of the first 25 minutes were dominated by Green Bay, the last 20 were controlled by Kaw Valley.

In the 35th minute, the Cranes evened the game at one apiece when Alex Durbin’s shot hit the cross bar and went straight down on the goal line.

Both teams continued to play until the lead official blew his whistle signaling a goal had in fact been scored.

It remained tied at one heading into halftime.

The physicality then cranked up in the second half.

Zach Hall was issued a yellow card in the 51st minute for Green Bay.

In the 53rd  minute, Jordan Salt was ejected for Kaw Valley after an unsportsmanlike red card was issued, putting the Cranes down a man for the rest of the game.

Tempers continued to flare as both teams wanted that second goal.

With 2 minutes left in regulation, Antonio De Castro had a chance to win it for the Voyageurs from 18 yards out but missed high.

Then in the 96th minute, Bromstedt broke free down the right sidelines and sent in a cross to Lettner, who scored to give the Cranes the victory and a pivotal three points.

“They are leading our conference in points and we were right there with them for a majority of the game,” added Kamler. “We get another chance this weekend to push over the top.”
