GREEN BAY – Ben Fredeen and Michael Vivian dropped only seven games in the WIAA Sectional Tennis Tournament en route to capturing the No. 1 doubles championship May 22 at Western Racquet and Fitness Club.

“Winning the tournament was a reaffirmation as to where we are at right now as a doubles team,” said Vivian. “It was one of the goals we had this year, and it feels good to cross it off the list.”

The duo defeated Kaukauna in round one, West De Pere in the semifinals and then dispatched the pair of Sebastian Guo and Graham Kothbauer from Preble in the finals to advance to the state Tournament as a high seed held May 30-June 1 at Nielsen Stadium in Madison.

“We are just going to take it one match at a time,” Vivian added. “We know what we are capable of. This has been a special year together, and we just want to make it to Saturday [finals day].”

At No. 1 singles, John Zakowski of Southwest defeated Nathan Balthazor of De Pere in straight sets after Balthazor had won the previous meeting in a third set earlier in the season.

“I’m proud to send our seniors out on a good note,” said Green Bay Southwest head coach Randy Nelson. “They’ll have life-long memories.”

Southwest edged out De Pere 48-43 to advance to team state held June 7-8 in Madison.

“Knowing everyone gets to keep going for a couple more weeks is a great feeling,” said Vivian. “It’s an awesome way to go out as a senior.”
