De Pere to host Christy’s Race

DE PERE – The De Pere High School track and field/cross-country teams will host its 37th annual Christy’s Race on Sunday, May 26.

The 4-mile run/walk will begin at 9 a.m. at Voyageur Park in De Pere.

Race-day registration begins at 7:45 a.m.

Age-group divisions for both boys and girls, awards and race t-shirts are highlights of the event.

There will also be chances to win prizes after the race and during the awards ceremony, which will take place at the finish line behind the old location of Bank Mutual in downtown De Pere.

“This race is in honor of Bjorn Christenson, who died in the fall of 1982 of a heart attack,” said current De Pere track and field/cross country head coach James Boyd. “Mr. Christenson was the long-time cross country and track coach, an educator and friend to many. He started the cross-country programs at the school. This race is a memorial to his commitment to education and athletics. We advertise the race as a tune-up for the Bellin Run [June 8]. All the proceeds will benefit the De Pere High School track and field and cross-country teams in the form of scholarships to graduating seniors in the program. I would estimate that more than $80,000 has been handed out to our student-athletes in the past 37 years.”

Boyd said Christy’s Race is the second longest running race in the area behind the Bellin.

Prior to May 22, the entry fee is $18.

Late/race-day registration is $22.

A special household rate with fees of $50/$60 is also available.
