School board facilitator vote pushed to May 20

GREEN BAY – The Green Bay school board interviewed two facilitators at a special meeting Monday, May 13, in its continued search of outside guidance to help the group work more efficiently.

Beverly Scow, assistant director of Wise Women Gathering Place, was in the boardroom for her presentation and Drew Howick, from Howick Associates, of Madison, presented his report via speakerphone.

Each interview lasted about 20 minutes.

All seven board member are in favor of looking for outside help.

Some board members, however, have been frustrated with the selection process and lack of full transparency with the public.

Including the discussion and vote set for May 20, this topic will be an agenda item at four straight board meetings.

At the April 22 regular board meeting the motion was tabled after some trustees raised concerns about it being added to the agenda without prior board discussion.

A decision was made to table the motion for two weeks in order to gather more information.

The topic was addressed again at the special board meeting on May 6, but was pushed because information about additional facilitators was initially not included.

The mistake was discovered, and the information was added, but not 24 hours before the meeting.

Trustees then agreed to bring in facilitators for interviews to find the best fit.

Scow and Howick were the only facilitators available for interviews.

A vote was planned Monday, but was pushed to the May 20 meeting to make the financial information available to the public.

If the board wants to use the professional development funds set aside in this year’s budget to pay for the facilitator or facilitators, it needs to be spent by the end of June, meaning sessions need to take place before then.

“If that doesn’t happen, if we can’t make dates work, it can be discussed to include funds in next year’s budget,” said Board President Brenda Warren.

Board members are set to vote on the motion at their regular meeting at 6 p.m. May 20.
