GREEN BAY – Former Green Bay Southwest offensive lineman Max Scharping was drafted by the Houston Texans in the second round of the National Football League draft April 26.

Scharping, who attended college at Northern Illinois University, was selected with the 55th overall pick.

Scharping is a 2014 Southwest graduate and received a master’s degree last December from NIU.

Ironically, his first NFL game will be a preseason contest against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field Aug. 8.

The 6-foot-6, 320-pound Scharping started all 53 games of his career at NIU and played every offensive snap (998) in 2018.

He is the first player to graduate from a Green Bay public school to be drafted into the NFL since 1988 when former Green Bay West quarterback Bud Keyes was picked by the Packers but released during training camp.
