GREEN BAY – Pulaski pitcher Easton Vertz threw five strong innings and the Red Raiders rapped out nine hits in an 11-0 Fox River Classic Conference victory over Green Bay Southwest April 23 at Southwest High School.

Vertz gave up only four hits and walked two in the five-inning win.

“It was fun out there today,” said Vertz, who is the son of Pulaski softball head coach Billi Jo Vertz. “I came in ready to go, and my defense played well behind me. Being up by so many runs helps, too – I could just concentrate on throwing strikes. I still have to work on my control a little bit.”

The only inning Southwest (4-3 overall, 2-3 FRCC) really threatened to score was in the fifth inning after it loaded the bases with one out, but Vertz ended the game with a strikeout.

The Red Raiders (3-4, 3-3) sent 12 batters to the plate in scoring seven runs in the second to blow the game wide open.

The Trojans didn’t help their cause by committing three errors in the marathon inning.

“We’ve been looking for this game all season long where we put all three phases together,” said Pulaski head coach Dennis Bogacz. “I thought we played good defense and Easton was sharp – he’s only given up one earned run all season.”

The Red Raiders added three runs in the fourth and a single tally in the fifth to end the game via the 10-run rule.

“It was great to see our bats come alive,” added Bogacz. “We put the ball in play with two outs and kept the pressure on Southwest defensively. It was good we jumped on them early – they’ve been playing some good baseball. I was really proud of our approach at the plate with two strikes.”

Chase Reinke and Brock Bogacz had two hits for Pulaski, while Sam Brodhagen, Connor Warden, Jarret Olson, Nathan Przybylski and Evan Schuurmans added singles.

Cade Milton had two hits for Southwest, while Jaicee Foster and Brett Ament had the other hits.

Southwest starting pitcher Bret Whiffen deserved a better fate on the mound but was not helped by the sloppy Trojans’ defense.
