Tell me about your family.

“I have an older brother named Drew who attends Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and both of my parents were born in Alexandria, Minnesota. We have moved around a lot, including living in Japan. My mom was an English teacher there for 20 months.”

Do you come from a sports family?

“Drew played tennis, ran cross country and swam, my mom did gymnastics and my dad wrestled.”

How long have you been playing tennis?

“I got a little bit of a late start – the eighth grade. Last season I played at No. 4 singles.”

Have you ever played doubles?

“I did a little last year, but I don’t think I was very good. I did improve this past offseason, so if I’m called upon to play doubles this year, I think I could have some success. I prefer singles, though – I don’t like letting my partner down in doubles.”

What are your goals this season?

“To play these higher-level varsity matches and have some success. My goal is to at least make it to sectionals.”

What’s it like playing for Steve and Lindsay Matuszewski?

“Lindsay is calm, and Steve is more sarcastic. Steve said it takes a few years to get used to his way of doing things. I like them.”

The team is very young this year.

“Yes, I’m the only senior on the team. I like to say that I’m setting up the underclassmen for success (laughing). I think regardless of our youth this season, we can do some good things. For sure the future looks bright.”

If you could go to a professional tournament, which one would you pick?

“The Australian Open because they play on the courts I like to play on.”

Have you ever played on any of the other surfaces?

“No, but I’d like to. Clay courts allow you to see if the ball is in or out more clear, and on grass, the ball doesn’t bounce as high – I think that might suit me.”

What is something about you most people wouldn’t know?

“I was living in Japan with my parents and brother when the earthquake and subsequent tsunami hit in 2011.”

Wow! What do you remember about that?

“With the earthquake, I remember it was about 3 p.m. and I was in school. I didn’t realize what was going on. We stayed in our cars overnight, and luckily my mom was working at the school that day. The destruction of the tsunami was incredible. We lived on the top of a big hill, so we were in no danger of the tsunami.”

What three words best describe you?

“Kind, hard-working, quiet.”

How will you be remembered at Bay Port?

“As the quiet guy.”

Tent camping or camper?

“Tent camping.”

Chocolate or vanilla?

“Chocolate.”

Table or booth?

“Booth.”

Sunrise or sunset?

“Sunrise.”

Cats or dogs?

“Dogs.”
