Senior Spotlight: Caelan Markusen – De Pere hockey, football

Caelan Markusen, a 5-foot-8, 175-pound senior at De Pere High School, recently completed his final season with the hockey team.

Markusen, who also played football this past fall, likes to hunt, fish and be outdoors.

His future plans include attending Carroll University and studying physical therapy.

Tell me why your nickname is Mom.

“Because my junior year I had to drive a ‘mom van’ to practice, and the nickname stuck from there.”

Tell me about your family.

“I have a younger brother named Ian who is a sophomore, my mom is from Manitowoc and my dad is from Two Rivers.”

Do you come from a sports family?

“Ian plays soccer and hockey, my grandpa played football, basketball and baseball and my dad played a little bit of football.”

Is there a sport you wish you had done in high school?

“I played baseball my freshman year, and I wish I had kept doing that.”

You were a converted inside linebacker that played running back this past football season.

“There was a need at the running back position, so I stepped up. It was an opportunity for me. I had played the position before when I was younger but not that much.”

And you played goalie on the hockey team.

“I started playing hockey when I was about 6 years old and played goalie the whole time. Most goalies can’t skate like a normal player, but I could always skate pretty well for a goalie.”

Do you and the family travel quite a bit?

“We go up to our family cabin in Land O’Lakes a lot in the summer.”

Is there something about you that most people wouldn’t know?

“I am left handed.”

What’s on your music playlist?

“I like to listen to a lot of country. My favorite artist is Billy Currington.”

What is your least favorite household chore?

“Washing my clothes.”

What would your dream job be?

“Working with professional athletes in some sort of physical therapy.”

What three words best describe you?

“Honest, hard-working, respectful.”

How will Caelan Markusen be remembered at De Pere?

“That I was always a happy guy to be around, and I was a good example for the younger people below me.
