Elementary school enrollment lines may change

DE PERE — Projected growth to areas surrounding one elementary school have prompted the Unified School District of De Pere board to look at options for redrawing the boundary lines for enrollment.

With an enrollment of 585 students, Susie C. Altmayer Elementary School has 101 students (or 21 percent) more than Heritage Elementary, which has 484 students, and 88 students (or 18 percent) more than Dickinson Elementary, which has 497 students.

Development of land that a decade ago was not extensively developed, especially in parts of Ledgeview, has contributed to the increase in number of kids attending Susie C. Altmayer Elementary School.

“The growth in the boundary lines is uneven,” said Superintendent of Schools Ben Villarruel. “We need to try to move (students residing in) future development in Ledgeview toward Dickinson or Heritage.”

The already high number of students, combined with a new Ryan Road development underway, added to future developments within the Altmayer enrollment boundaries, mean the school enrollment numbers are on pace to continue to grow, Villarruel said.

Enrollment for the 2019-20 school year is projected to be 595 at Altmayer Elementary, 502 at Dickinson Elementary, and 476 at Heritage Elementary.

An advisory committee consisting of parents in the school district will form soon to study the issue of elementary school boundaries on the east side, with the first meeting to be held in April.

The committee will meet through May, make a recommendation to the school board in June, and hold a presentation to parents in September.

The school board will vote on the issue next fall, Villarruel said.

School busing could be an issue if students from neighborhoods now in the Altmayer school enrollment boundaries need to be transported to other schools, so representatives from Lamers Bus Lines will be consulted.

Elementary school principals and representatives from De Pere and Ledgeview will also be consulted.
The district last made changes to enrollment boundaries in 2006.
