DE PERE – De Pere girls’ basketball player Rachel Kerkhoff eclipsed the 1,000 career point total in a Feb. 16 game against Ashwaubenon.

Kerkhoff scored 23 points in the Redbirds 58-53 victory over the Jaguars.

“Getting 1,000 points means so much to me,” said Kerkhoff, who has been on the varsity all four years of her high school career. “Growing up, it was always one of my goals, and it’s crazy to think that I actually accomplished it.”

True to her character, Kerkhoff gave much of the credit to those around her.

“I would not have been able to reach my goals without my teammates these past four years,” she added. “They have supported me and pushed me every day, and they are the reason that I was able to do it.”

In 96 career games, Kerkhoff has totaled 1,007 points, for an average of 10.5 points per game.

“Rachel will finish her career as a top-five scorer in De Pere history,” said De Pere head coach Jeremy Boileau about her 5-foot-5 guard, who is averaging 15.6 points a game this season. “The thing that stands out about Rachel, she is a tremendous competitor. Whether it on game day competing or a shooting game in practice, she hates to lose. I believe that is what has led her to become such a successful scorer.”

Kerkhoff broke the school record for most three-point field goals in a season and a career, and currently leads the team in steals (45) and assists (87) and is shooting 80 percent from the free-throw line.

“Rachel is a tremendous scorer, but she also distributes the ball to her teammates,” added Boileau. “She is a relentless defender and that has created a lot of easy baskets for her on offense – that is hard to teach. Most of the time, she is the shortest player on the court, but she plays with determination to positively impact our team both offensively and defensively.”

Kerkhoff was a member of the WIAA Division 1 state runner-up and FRCC championship squads her sophomore year.

De Pere will host Brookfield East Feb. 22 to open the WIAA Division 1 postseason.
