Local wrestlers win sectional titles

APPLETON – Cody Minor (Ashwaubenon, 113), Cole Gille (Pulaski, 120), Chandler Stordeur (Bay Port, 145), Connor Ramage (Ashwaubenon, 160), Charlie Hooyman (De Pere, 195) and Max Meeuwsen (Bay Port, 285) all won sectional championships Feb. 16 at Appleton North High School, and punched their ticket to the Kohl Center in Madison for the WIAA individual tournament Feb. 21-23.

In addition, Shane Corrigan (De Pere, 106), Jake Hendricks (West De Pere, 113), Evan Frisque (West De Pere, 160), Marty Kiernan (Ashwaubenon, 170), Cade Cummings (Green Bay Preble, 152) and Isaac Klarkowski (Green Bay United, 285) had runner-up finishes and qualified for state.

“I have mixed emotions right now,” said Ashwaubenon head coach Jody VanLaanen. “I’m very pleased for Marty to qualify for the first time in his high school career. Connor and Cody performed very well today in winning titles. My heart goes out to Dawson (Dembroski) and Noah (Leisgang). Anything can happen at sectionals and usually does. They’ll be back strong next year.”

One of the more entertaining final matches occurred at the 145-pound classification where Stordeur came back in the third period with a takedown and escape to edge out Tyler Vanderlois of Kaukauna.

“I’m very pleased to have two champions on the day,” said Bay Port head coach Brad Shefchik. “I knew some of the other classifications would be tight, and unfortunately, got beat in a couple of them. We’ll build on that. Right now I’m looking forward to seeing how far Chandler and Max can take it.”

The 160-pound match between Ashwaubenon and West De Pere went to overtime, as Ramage edged out Frisque in ‘sudden victory.’

Despite the defeat, Frisque remains upbeat about his trip to Madison.

“There were a lot of good opponents out there today,” said Frisque. “I got beat in the final but feel like I can better my result from last year with good wrestling in each match down at state.”

Ashwaubenon finished runner-up in the team competition, while Pulaski (second), Bay Port (fourth), De Pere (ninth), West De Pere (10th), Preble (11th) and Green Bay United (14th) rounded out the results in the 16-team sectional.
