Andre Stewart is a senior forward on the Ashwaubenon hockey team who cites the New York Rangers as being his favorite NHL club.

He is described as being funny, enthusiastic and positive.

Stewart said he would have liked to be Sir Isaac Newton for a day because he enjoys the subject of math and wondered what his daily life consisted of back in his era.

What is it like to be small in stature but pack a big punch on an open-ice hit or check? “Honestly, I haven’t really thought too much about my height and don’t let the height of others intimidate me. I feel as if my height becomes more of a shock to the other teams because they’ll underestimate how hard they think they need to hit me, and then they end up the one on the ice.”

Talk about meeting new teammates from different high schools (Ashwaubenon co-ops with Pulaski, Seymour and Wrightstown) and how you’ve built lasting relationships? “It definitely has been a bonus having to co-op with these other schools. Getting to know everyone on our team was relatively easy because everyone was rather nice and had a positive attitude. Apart from hockey and school, we try to do a lot together. One of the ways we do this is by going to sporting events whenever our teams play each other.”

What is your most memorable moment? “My first varsity hockey game and getting to be on a line with my brother my freshmen year.”

What’s the hardest part about performing in a hockey game? “Playing your position properly. With so much going on quickly, it is easy to move out of place, allowing the other team an opportunity to score.”

You had two big goals in a rivalry game versus De Pere this year – talk about that game and what it meant to you. “The game was pretty important for a chance to better our position in the conference. The game felt like every other game to me. As for the goals, I feel I was just in the right position at the right time with a little bit of luck.”

Do you have a nickname or something a teammate calls you during a game? “The nicknames I get are ‘Dr. Dre’ and ‘Andre 3000’ because of my name.”

What is one thing that other teammates or coaches don’t know about you? “I love watching anime. Most of my teammates know it because I’m pretty open about it.”

What are your college aspirations? “To graduate with a good GPA and meet new friends.”

Talk about what Coach Golden has meant to you. “Coach Golden has significantly impacted the way in which I play hockey. He has helped bring my positioning up to par, and whenever I do something wrong, he always is nice about telling me what I can do to correct it.”

What are your hobbies? “In my free time, I like to play video games and hang out with my friends.”

What is your favorite arena or stadium you’ve played hockey in? “Our home rink Cornerstone Community Center, because it is a nice facility and brings back so many memories.”

Three hockey cities you’d love to see an NHL game in? “Montreal, Pittsburgh and Washington – not necessarily because I like the teams more or less. I’d just like to visit those places.”

What is your favorite hockey move in a game? “Toe-dragging.”

Which do you prefer – college or NHL hockey? “NHL hockey because it is much faster paced.”
