ASHWAUBENON—The Ashwaubenon Jaguars’ girls basketball team put the defensive clamps down on the Sheboygan North Golden Raiders, Dec. 29, in picking up a 37-27 FRCC victory in a game held at Ashwaubenon High School.

Lydia Schaible led the Jaguars (5-6, 3-4 FRCC) with 8 points, and Rylie Severson added seven.

Meanwhile, Meredith Opie paced the Golden Raiders (6-6, 3-5 FRCC) with eight.

The Jaguars shot just 23% from the field, while the Golden Raiders managed just six field goals all game in connecting on 21% of their attempts.

Ashwaubenon jumped out to a 9-0 lead behind the hot-hand of Severson. She canned a long 18-footer from the left-wing, and then made a triple from well beyond the arc and was fouled in the process.

On the other end, the hoop seemed to have a lid on it, repelling shot after shot the Golden Raiders took.

“I thought we closed out on Opie and Scharinger well tonight,” said Nicky VanLaanen, Ashwaubenon basketball coach. “They came in averaging close to 30 points a game and held them to both I think–10 points.”

It took Sheboygan North exactly 8:21 before they could put their first point on the board, and after Jaguars freshman Lily Hansford knocked down a triple of her own, Ashwaubenon had extended its lead to 14-1 with 6:29 left till intermission.

Thankfully, for the Golden Raiders, they were able to knock down free throws to end the half and stay within striking distance (23-11) at halftime.

The Jaguars utilized their ‘bigs’ to start the second half with Schaible and Anna Wendorf getting touches in the paint to combat the much smaller Golden Raiders frontcourt.

The Jaguars pushed their lead to 35-22 with 7:06 left in the game after Madi Appleton got open on a jumper.

The Golden Raiders were unable to find the basket down the stretch as Ashwaubenon went on to capture the double-digit victory.

“We got back on track last night versus Algoma,” added VanLaanen. “We then carried the momentum into today defensively. It wasn’t our greatest day shooting the ball, but we have pieces in place with Lydia coming back from injury and the team as a whole playing together. We need to take this win now and translate it into good basketball come January and February.”
