DE PERE – Alivia McNabb scored 13 points as the West De Pere girls’ basketball team defeated Seymour in Bay Conference action Dec. 4, 59-41.

Casey Jepson added 10 points and four assists in the victory.

The Phantoms opened up an early four-point lead behind the play of point guard Sydney Appleton, who scored seven points during an early West De Pere run.

With under six minutes left in the first half and the Phantoms holding a 21-16 lead, Piper Linssen came off the bench and nailed a jumper.

Alexa Thomson added a three-pointer from the left-wing to give West De Pere its biggest lead of the evening at 26-18.

The Phantoms took a 33-22 lead into halftime after Alivia Baumann hit an elbow jumper.

“I didn’t think we played a very good half of basketball,” said West De Pere head coach Chris Abaray. “We allowed Seymour too many touches in the lane and we were a bit slow with our close-outs.”

The Phantoms’ defense then turned up the heat in the second half.

“I thought we played much better the final 18 minutes of the game,” said Abaray. “We got out in transition better and intercepted a lot of passes that the Thunder tried to skip cross-court. Rebekah Buboltz gave us a big lift off the bench with her fight and grit. She gives 100 percent every time she’s out there.”

Seymour got to within 37-28, but that’s as close as they got. West De Pere used a 15-8 run to push the margin back up to 16 points on two free throws by McNabb.

“I wanted to be more aggressive down the stretch,” said McNabb. “I felt like we didn’t do a very good job of that early. It seemed like we either got fouled or we finished with a lay-up in the second half.”

West De Pere improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

“I’m very pleased with the start of the season,” Abaray stated about his team. ”We have to keep it going now.”
