Maleya Chynoweth is a senior at De Pere High School on the dance team.

Besides dance, she loves to play Guitar Hero on the Nintendo Wii, go shopping in Appleton, hang out with friends and be outdoors.

Chynoweth is planning on attending college, but is still undecided where and what she will study at this point. She would like to find a school with a dance team.

How do you pronounce your name?

“MA-LEE-AH SHIN-O-WITH.”

I kept saying it wrong, so I’d guess most people have difficulties with it?

“Yes, no one can pronounce it.”

Tell me about your family.

“I have an older sister named Miranda who is a senior in college, another older sister named Myha who graduated a few years ago and a little brother named Roosevelt Jr. who is a freshman at De Pere.”

Do you come from a dance/sports family?

“My dad played basketball, so we’ve all kind of done that in the family. I also did gymnastics from a young age.”

How about a high school sport you wish you would have done?

“Even though I’m a girl, football would be fun.”

How many years have you been involved in dance?

“I’ve been on the team since my sophomore year, but I didn’t have any dance experience before that.”

Do you have a most memorable dance moment?

“I think last year during regionals before awards. De Pere is the team known to pump everyone up, so I went into a circle and did a death drop and the crowd went wild – it’s what I’m known for.”

How about a most embarrassing moment?

“Sometimes I just lose my place and have to restart again. I don’t get too embarrassed.”

What is something about you most people wouldn’t know?

“I used to have a unibrow, but it’s gone now.”

What is your favorite state and why?

“I like Chicago, so I would say Illinois – I go there a lot.”

If you could be anywhere right now instead of talking to me, where would it be?

“Probably sleeping – I’m tired. It’s tough having school all day, then dance practice and doing your homework.”

What’s on your music playlist?

“A little bit of everything. I like the ‘90s, rap and I can listen to ‘80s when I’m with my mom. I also love R&B.”

If you could be one person for a day, who would it be and why?

“I would love to be Beyonce just because I admire her and she’s great. She’s lives a cool life.”

What three words best describe you?

“Goofy, loud, nice.”

Do you have any bad habits?

“I bite my nails.”

What is one thing on your bucket list?

“I would like to try skydiving. I don’t think I’m afraid of heights.”

How will you be remembered at De Pere High School?

“I want to be known as someone who was nice to everyone and kept things in a fun mood.”
