ASHWAUBENON-Hallory Domnick captured two individual events (100-yard butterfly and 500-yard freestyle), and Jocelyn McNicoll (100-yard breaststroke) and Sydney Popp (200-yard freestyle) one each as the Ashwaubenon Jaguars finished second to Sturgeon Bay in the WIAA Sectional swimming meet held at Ashwaubenon Community Pool. (Nov. 3)

Domnick set a pool record with a 5:12.43 swim in the twenty-lap event.

“I was really nervous going into the race,” said Domnick. “I know I was capable of swimming the way I did, but to actually go out and do it in an important tournament was fun. I am excited for next weekend.”

In the first individual race of the day, Popp went out and set the tone with a fast first four laps and then just edged out Morgen Frausto of Plymouth at the wall by less than a second.

“I felt like I got this young group geared up for the day,” said Popp. “It’s one thing to be seeded the best, but I needed to go out and prove it in the pool. I was pretty pumped after winning the race.”

The youth movement continued for the Jaguars late in the day as McNicoll came out on top in the breaststroke. After falling behind early in the race, Jocelyn pulled ahead of Lauren Klawitter of Seymour late and held onto win her biggest event to date and advance to Madison in her first year of high school competition.

“The crowd and atmosphere was amazing for this tournament,” said McNicoll. “I’m just grateful that the coaches gave me an opportunity. It was a grueling race and I’m just happy that I was able to help my team out with the win.”

Junior Evelyn Geurts was not a favorite coming into the 50-yard freestyle race.

However, Geurts swam an amazing 25.30 and had to wait till the other sectional meets concluded to find out if she earned a spot in the state field.

When the results were in, she qualified by 0.02 seconds!

She was also part of the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay to end the day.

In addition, Popp qualified for State in the 500-yard freestyle, and Ashwaubenon advanced in two of the three relays with freshman Chloe O’Connell being the additional swimmer advancing.

“Obviously, a bit frustrating losing overall to Sturgeon Bay,” said Jennifer Steffel, Jaguars swim coach. “However, this team had a lot of freshman and sophomores swimming at key positions today. We will be swimming in 7 of the 12 events this Friday at the Natatorium. I knew a couple of races would make the difference between Sturgeon Bay, Plymouth, and us. Unfortunately, they didn’t go our way today. Very excited for these girls to get to experience the state tournament and build on the future.”
