Name: Kyra Schamber

Parents: Michelle and Vincent Schamber

Activity: Music, performing arts

What is it like to be a leader for the music and performing arts at Ashwaubenon High School? “It feels good. I have been involved with music and performing for a long time now, and it’s nice to be able to share the knowledge I have gained with others and watch them grow as performers.”

What is your most embarrassing moment ever in music? “I have been fortunate enough not to have any terrible experiences, but I suppose I would have to say at the district solo and ensemble my sophomore year, I was sick, and my voice cracked several times during a solo.”

How many years have you been involved in music? “I started piano in kindergarten and I joined choir in the sixth grade, but I loved to sing long before that.”

What is your most memorable moment? “I think my most memorable moment was my sophomore year on the choir trip to Hawaii. Our show choir visited a beach that was special to one of our members, and we sang a song called Lullaby, and it was just a very touching, emotional moment that I will never forget.”

What’s the hardest part about performing in a music or performing arts competition? “The hardest part is probably the nerves. Even though I have been performing for a long time, I still get nervous, because with live shows, you just never know what might happen.”

If you could be somebody for a day, who would it be? “I don’t have a specific person, but I think I would like to be somebody that performs on Broadway, just to see what their life is like behind the scenes and what it would be like to perform for thousands of people every night.”

What is your routine before a big competition starts? “I always try to take deep breaths to calm myself down, and I make sure I stand tall and act confident. I believe that the more confident you pretend to be, the more confident you will be and the better the judges will view you.”

Do you have a nickname or something your classmates call you? “Not really. My classmates do make fun of how short I am sometimes. I’m only 5 feet tall.”

What is one thing that other classmates don’t know about you? “I don’t often have free time, but when I do, I like to read.”

Winning individual honors or a group performance win? “I think winning group performances is better because you have people to celebrate and share the joy with.”

What are your college aspirations? “I am hoping to attend the UW-Madison School of Business and major in actuarial science.”

What would your dream job be once you graduate? “I don’t really have a ‘dream job’, but I am hoping to get a job I enjoy at a good company.”

What are your hobbies? “I like to sing, dance, read, and I’m also on the Ashwaubenon math team.”

What is your favorite event ever attended? “I would probably have to say when I saw Les Miserables at the Appleton Performing Arts Center.”

What is your favorite type of music? “As geeky as it sounds, I really like to listen to musical soundtracks and sometimes choir music.”

What is your favorite thing to do on your phone? “I don’t do too much on my phone, but I probably spend the most time on Snapchat.”

What three words describe you? “Hard-working, performer, independent.”

What is your favorite trip ever taken? “When I was in middle school, my family took a Mediterranean cruise, and we got to visit cities in Greece, Italy, and Turkey-the sights were incredible.”

TV or Outdoor Activities? “I tend to be more of an indoor person, but I love to sit and read in the sun during the summer.”
