Africa Hope Run coming Oct. 20

By Press Staff

DE PERE – The Ninth Annual Africa Hope Run 5K/10K Run/Walk will start at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at De Pere High School.

The run, sponsored by Spring Lake Church, takes place on tree-lined residential streets in fall colors.

All proceeds from the event will be used to provide clean water, food, education and medical care for AIDS orphans and the poor of Malawi in southeast Africa as part of the ongoing AQUAID Lifeline of the United Kingdom project.

“The thing I love about this event is that I know that the funds raised all go completely to the project. People from Spring Lake Church visit the site twice a year and have a relationship with the people we are helping in Malawi,” said Marybeth Geissler, event organizer. “This year’s race will enable us to finish a multi-year project in which we built a secondary school with a science lab and library. Prior to this, most students ended their education in eighth grade because the nearest secondary school was an hour and a half away. Many of the girls would then get married and start having children. This school has opened a new world of possibilities for the young people of the Funsani village.”

Participants can celebrate their run finish with cookies, bagels, fruit, pancakes/porkies and more, which are free to participants.

A professionally-designed long-sleeved cotton T-shirt, featuring a unique design every year, will be given to the first 700 participants to remember the run/walk.

Cost is $30 for adults before race day and $35 on race day. For children before race day cost is $20 and $25 on the day of the event.

Onsite registration begins at 6:30 a.m. race day.

This is a chip-timed race and awards will be given for the top three place finishers for males and females in numerous age categories.

People can also walk the course and strollers are welcome. However, pets are not.
