Hendricks too much for Jags to handle

ASHWAUBENON – Pulaski running back Dylan Hendricks was too much for the Ashwaubenon football team to handle last night.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound senior not only controlled the game on the ground but also with his arm in the Red Raiders 34-13 Fox River Classic Conference victory over the Jags at Ashwaubenon High School.

Hendricks, a North Dakota State University recruit, rushed for 192 yards and threw for another 93, as Pulaski held the Jags to 143 yards of total offense.

“Hendricks got his yards on the ground, but he beat us with his arm, too,” said Ashwaubenon head coach Mark Jonas. “He threw the ball better than I’ve seen him do. He’s just tough – he’s a D1 recruit for a reason. I thought our kids did a good job of rallying to tackle him.”

The Jags (3-4 overall, 3-4 FRCC) trailed just 12-7 at the break, thanks to a strong effort by the defense.

“I was really impressed with our defense in the first half,” Jonas said. “Our offense got it going enough there to get into the end zone, but we needed to find a way to come out a lot stronger than what we did in the second half.”

The Red Raiders (6-1, 6-1) did what they do best on their first possession of the game in going 66 yards in 12 plays to take a 6-0 lead. The 6-minute drive was capped off by a 3-yard touchdown plunge by JJ Szymanski.

After Pulaski’s Logan Lukasik picked off a Cadian Vang pass halfway through the opening quarter, the Red Raiders had to settle for a 30-yard field goal from Alec Jonet to make it 9-0. A key holding call at the 1-yard line pushed Pulaski back to the 13, forcing the field goal.

Kyle Krueger caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Vang a few minutes into the second quarter to cut the deficit to 9-7.

Jonet would add a 31-yard field goal right before the half to make it 12-7.

For all the Jags had done in the first half to keep it close, Pulaski’s Brock Egnarski took the opening kickoff of the second half 80 yards for a score to make it 19-7.

“That obviously really hurt,” said Jonas about the kickoff return. “We had done a great job in the first half and it all changed in about 15 seconds with that return.”

Hendricks hit Nathan Przybylski with a 42-yard touchdown toss 3 minutes into the fourth quarter to make it 26-7, before Ashwaubenon’s Riley Siudzinski returned the ensuing kickoff to the 3-yard line, setting up Cam Wheeler’s 1-yard touchdown rush on fourth down.

Hendricks closed the scoring when he stormed in from 8 yards out with 3:29 remaining in the game.

In all, the Red Raiders outscored the Jags 22-6 after intermission.

“I thought Ashwaubenon was very physical,” said Pulaski head coach Jerad Marsh. “People don’t think of us as a passing team, but when a team like Ashwaubenon stacks the box against us, we have to be able to throw. Dylan is a very versatile kid and we are blessed to have him and the guys in front of him on our team. No, we don’t spend the majority of our practices pass blocking, but the guys did a nice job in that area tonight.”

Ashwaubenon has made the WIAA state playoffs 20 consecutive years, but they will have to win the remaining two games of the regular season to guarantee another postseason berth. Fortunately for the Jags, they play the Sheboygan teams in the next two weeks, who are a combined 1-13 this season.

“We have to win games,” Jonas said. “Sheboygan North and Sheboygan South are both struggling, but that doesn’t mean they’re not going to try and ruin what we’ve got. Traveling to Sheboygan (North next week) is always tough, and then the next week when we host South, it’s Homecoming. Our kids are resilient and will come back strong.”
