Bullfrogs can’t hold lead in loss to Rivets

GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Bullfrogs baseball team had an early lead, but nine consecutive runs by the Rockford Rivets led to a 12-7 loss at Joannes Stadium on June 12 in Northwoods League action.

Green Bay (5-10) led 4-3 after four innings, but the Rivets (10-5) scored five runs in the sixth to take an 8-4 advantage. Rockford tacked on a pair of insurance runs in each of the eighth and ninth innings.

Green Bay returned to Joannes for the first time since June 7 after they went 1-3 on their recently completed four-game road trip.

The Rivets outhit Green Bay 10-6, with both teams committing two errors.

After Rockford took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth, the Bullfrogs responded with three runs to jump ahead.

Tate Soderstrom (Arizona) and Cooper Morrison (UC-Davis) smacked back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, before Rudy Aguilar (St. John’s) reached on an error scoring Soderstrom. Morrison would score a batter later on a wild pitch, and then Collin Luty (Northern Kentucky) knocked in Aguilar with a single to close the scoring in the inning.

With the game out of reach, Green Bay tallied three times in the ninth.

Jake Munoz (San Francisco) walked to force in a run, Blaise Maris (Florida Tech) had a sacrifice fly and Soderstrom singled to score another.

Soderstrom had two hits in five at bats for the ‘Frogs, while Munoz reach based three times via walk.

Relief pitcher Colby Morris (Middlebury College) took the loss by giving up five earned runs in his one inning of work. The righty faced nine batters in the marathon sixth inning.

Starting pitcher Jake Zatopek (Incarnate Word) went five strong innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits. Zatopek walked two and struck out three.

David Toth (Hillsdale College) went the final three innings and surrendered four runs (three earned) on three hits, while walking three and striking out five.

The two teams will square off at Joannes again tonight for a 6:35 game, before the Bullfrogs hit the road for another four-game road trip.
