Pirates keep conference wrestling hopes alive

DE PERE – The Bay Port wrestling team kept its Fox River Classic Conference title hopes alive with a 42-30 victory over De Pere Jan. 25 at De Pere High School.

The Pirates, who are 5-0 in FRCC dual-action matches, will travel to Pulaski (6-0) next Thursday, Feb. 1, with everything on the line for the title. Bay Port also has a make-up match with Sheboygan North remaining Jan. 29.

“De Pere has a tough team,” said Bay Port head coach Brad Shefchik. “They were wrestling a couple guys down tonight, so that gave us a little advantage. It was tough the way it was. We expected some pins, but we also knew we had to avoid getting pinned. Overall we did what we needed to do to get by.”

Sophomores Sam Bruss (113) and Andrew Lopez (120) were both out of the lineup for De Pere.

After winning six consecutive conference titles from 2011-16, Bay Port failed to finish on top a season ago, but is looking to prevent Pulaski from winning back-to-back FRCC championships this year.

“It’s the perfect story I guess,” added a smiling Shefchik about the Pulaski match. “They won the championship last year and are a very solid team. We have everything in front of us, so we just have to make sure we are prepared and wrestle to the best of our ability.”

As for the victory over the Redbirds, things got started at 152 with De Pere’s Max Bruss getting a 4-0 decision over Chandler Stordeur.

After Caleb Hale won a 16-4 major decision to give Bay Port a 4-3 lead, the teams combined for five straight pins.

Travis Jahnke (170), Drake Anderson (182) and Ely Trast (285) all won their matches by pin for the Pirates, with  Jack Ehrfurth (195) and Max Meeuwsen (220) both getting pinned. Halfway through the night, Bay Port held a 22-15 lead.

Tristan Warzynski gave the Pirates a 26-13 lead with an 11-3 major decision at 106, before Connor Halverson (113) won via pin and Chance Osmanski (120) won an 11-2 major decision.

Austin Heim (132) got the only other victory of the night for Bay Port with a pin of Linus Smith at the 37-second mark of the second period. Heim’s victory – which was the 12th of 14 matches on the night – clinched the overall win for the Pirates.
