Jaguar hockey wins 5th in a row

By Murray Gleffe, Correspondent

ASHWAUBENON-The Ashwaubenon Jaguar hockey team blanked the Rhinelander Hodags 6-0 Saturday afternoon (Jan. 13) at the Cornerstone Community Ice Center.

The Jaguars received two goals from Kaden Appleton and one apiece from Tyler Roethlisberger, Graham Manders, Joe Deboth, and Joey Hamielec.

The Jaguars outshot the Hodags 33-12.

The Jaguars came out on Senior Night and scored just 2:22 into the game.

Jaguar forward Liam Golden sent a shot into the zone that took a precarious bounce of the boards and ended up right in front of the Hodag goal.

Appleton was the recipient of the โ€˜good fortuneโ€™ and put the puck into the net past goaltender Seth Stafford.

โ€œWe talked about two weeks ago that big things could be in store for Kaden,โ€ said Jaguar Hockey Coach Matt Golden. โ€œAt the time, I think he had one point, and after todayโ€™s game I believe he has 12 points. Iโ€™m really proud of how he has stuck with it this season. Itโ€™s paying off for him.โ€

It was the first of many good things to happen for the Jaguar hockey team.

Four minutes later, with the Jaguars leading 1-0, Jaguar defensemen Manders got a shot off from the blue line that Stafford didnโ€™t secure into his pads.

Hamielec was waiting patiently in front of the net and went top shelf to make it 2-0 for the home team.

The Jaguars didnโ€™t go to the penalty box till the last minute of the period and they took that two-goal advantage into the first intermission.

The Jaguars dominated the opening 17 minutes with a nine-shots on goal advantage.

โ€œI was really happy with the first period,โ€ Golden said. โ€œWe took care of the puck and we jumped to open spaces on the ice. Additionally, we played physical but clean hockey.โ€

After the Hodags went one man down to start period number two, the Jaguars quickly went to work.

Manders (Jaguars) took the puck at mid-ice, and went straight down to the right side of the Hodag zone.

His wrister just beat the outstretched glove of Stafford and suddenly the Jaguars had taken a 3-0 lead with 14:01 left in period number two.

As impressive as the Jaguar offense and defense was during the first 34 minutes, Jaguar goaltender Matt Piontkowski was going about his business in workmanlike fashion.

Piontkowski made eight saves; many of them tricky snags where he was lunging on the ice for the puck to save a goal from going in.

The Hodags were clinging to life-support to start the last period.

Their one chance went by the wayside in the first two minutes when they couldnโ€™t convert on a power-play and it seemed to suck the life out of the road team that traveled 150 miles south to play.

The Jaguars then scored three additional goals (Stewart, Appleton, Deboth) within a 121 second time frame where they were met with little resistance from the Hodag team.

It gave the Jaguars a 6-0 insurmountable lead.

Down the stretch with a running clock ticking along, the Jaguar coaching staff and players wanted to get the shutout for Piontkowski and they accomplished that with ease.

โ€œMatt (Piontkowski) really worked hard over the break to work on the little things in goaltending,โ€ Golden added. โ€œHe has given up only five goals now in the last four games and has looked sharp. These last two shutouts should help his confidence a lot.โ€

The Jaguars improve to 11-5 overall and will host Green Bay United on Jan. 16
