HARTLAND – For the fourth year in a row, the Bay Area Ice Bears girls’ hockey team came home victorious in the Arrowhead Turkey Tournament at the Mullett Ice Arena in Hartland.

Bay Area won its first two games by a combined 11-1 score and ended the championship contest in a 0-0 tie, but won in a shootout. The WIAA doesn’t count shootout wins as a victory so officially the Ice Bears are 2-0-1 on the season.

“To save time and to keep the rest of the games on track (the organizers) sent us straight into a shootout in the championship game,” said Bay Area head coach Brandon Erkkila.

The Ice Bears opened up the tournament with a 4-0 win over the Brookfield Glacier. Bay Area got two goals from Mia Dunning (Ashwaubenon) and one each from Katerina Zrnova (foreign exchange student attending Ashwaubenon from the Czech Republic) and Jordyn Kadrlik (Bay Port). Goalie Delaney Butterfield (Green Bay Notre Dame) stopped all 20 shots.

In a 7-1 victory over the Lakeshore Lightning, Dunning scored twice, Zrnova had three and Maddie Gibson (Green Bay Southwest) and Kamdyn McCracken (Green Bay Preble) had one apiece. Butterfield had 10 saves on 11 shots.

In the championship game against the Rock County Fury, Bay Area got outshot by a 35-19 margin but Butterfield was stellar in net, stopping all 35 shots she saw.

“Delaney let in one goal all together. She was just solid and we couldn’t be more proud of her. Zrnova scored three of her four goals and the shootout goal on her backhand, which isn’t something you normally see, but for her it works well.”

Evelyn Vincent (Southwest) led the Ice Bears with three assists in the tournament, while Kadrlik and Dunning added two each.

Bay Area is next in action on Tuesday, Nov. 28, when they play at Lakeshore, this time at the Ozaukee Ice Center. The Ice Bears open up their home schedule on Friday, Dec. 1, when they host University School of Milwaukee at 8:00 at Cornerstone.
