Senior Spotlight: Alex Craig – Bay Port Boys Soccer

BY RICH PALZEWIC
CORRESPONDENT

Alex Craig is a senior at Bay Port High School who just completed the soccer season with the Pirates. Craig, who scored seven goals, received second-team honors for his play in the Fox River Classic Conference. Alex plans to attend college, but he’s not quite sure where yet. He will most likely study graphic design and is still leaving the option of playing college soccer open.

Name: Alex Craig
Parents: Nicole & Kevin
School: Bay Port
Sport: soccer
Position: forward/defense/midfield

Congrats on your second-team FRCC honors! “I wasn’t expecting it at all, so the fact that the other coaches would pick me, was quite an honor.”

Have you participated in any other high school sports besides soccer? “I haven’t, but I’m thinking about doing track next spring. I’d probably be a sprinter.”

When did you start playing soccer? “About second or third grade. I did play football until I entered middle school, but then I decided to just stick with soccer because I wasn’t growing very fast.”

How about a sport you wish you could have done? “Definitely hockey. I used to play a lot of street hockey when I was younger with my friends. We’d either use rollerblades or just our shoes. I can skate a little, but I can’t even skate backwards.”

Do you come from a sports family? “My dad played high school football and my mom played soccer. My older brother Jahvarn Robinson-Craig played soccer here at Bay Port.”

Soccer is physical! Have you ever suffered a serious injury? “I had initially broken my collarbone on a slip-and-slide and then re-broke it playing soccer. The doctor had told me I was cleared to play but that I probably shouldn’t. The first game I came back I broke it again when someone slide tackled me! That was my freshman year.”

Do you remember your first varsity goal? “It was against Sturgeon Bay my junior year. I dribbled the ball up the middle a little bit and I had Duncan McGlachlin on the right side. I passed him the ball, he passed it right back and I beat the goalie.”

What is your most memorable sports moment? “Definitely the goal against Ashwaubenon this season in the first 10 seconds of the game.”

How about a most embarrassing moment? “Back when I was 10, I was a little more aggressive. I was getting a little physical with the other team and got a red card. It was pretty embarrassing.”

What are some of your hobbies? “I like playing on my computer, snowboarding, skiing, 4-wheeling, riding dirt bikes and going up north with my family.”

What three words best describe you? “Generous, funny, open-minded.”

If you could have lunch with any famous person, who would it be? “(Soccer player) Marcelo Vieira. He kind of has the same hair as me!”

Yeah, let’s talk about that hair! “Freshman year I got it cut and then just let it grow out. My thoughts are ‘when it’s time to get a real job, then I’ll cut it’!”

You were suspended for a few games early on…what happened? “I had gotten some bad grades and got suspended for the first eight games this season.”

What did you learn from it? “I learned my lesson. I had to sit out those first games and had to watch my team without me, when I know I could have been helping them.”

What is something about you most people wouldn’t know? “My brother Jahvarn came here as a freshman and he’s adopted from Jamaica. I also have a younger sister named Grace who is adopted from the Democratic Republic of Congo.”

Lie on the beach or ski down the slopes? “Lie on the beach.”
Cats or dogs? “Cats.”
Baseball or football? “Football.”
Tiny house or tree house? “Tree house.”

What will you miss most about Bay Port? “Definitely just playing under the lights at Bay Port.”

How will Alex Craig be remembered at Bay Port? “That I was a good soccer player and that I was a funny person to be around.”
