SUAMICO – Senior setter Maura McGinnity made sure the Lady Pirates volleyball team got a win heading into the upcoming Fox River Classic Conference season.
McGinnity recorded a team high 17 assists to go along with her 4 serving aces in Bay Port’s 25-21, 27-25, 25-22 non-conference win over West De Pere on September 5 at Bay Port High School.
“Maura did a really good job of controlling the tempo and pace of our offense,” said Bay Port head coach Brendan Baier. “She put our hitters in successful situations, dealing with some difficult passes that were tight to the net or off the net. At the service line she also did a really nice job of creating chaos on the other side of the net for West De Pere and got a few points out of it for us.”
The Pirates, who improved to 9-2 overall on the year, open up FRCC play on September 7 when they travel to perennial conference power Notre Dame. West De Pere dropped to 0-7 and has yet to win a set this season.
Trailing 17-15 in the opening set, the Pirates scored 10 of the last 14 points to win going away.
The middle game was the best of the night, as Bay Port trailed 18-15 after the Phantoms went on an 8-0 burst to seize control. With West De Pere still up 23-21, the Pirates ended the set with a 6-2 run to end it.
Olivia Schaut’s strong serving late in game three helped Bay Port turn a 20-17 deficit into a 22-20 lead, before closing it out.
Mady Schroeder had 11 digs, Brooke Clement led the team with 7 kills and Schaut had 6 aces.
