Manitowoc Lincoln Preview: the Pirates will host the Ships on Thursday, August 31, the last of the Thursday games for the year… Manitowoc (0-2, 0-2) has lost close games to De Pere (23-13) and Green Bay Preble (31-26)… Bay Port hasn’t lost to the Ships since the 2008 season. Including in that is a 56-19 win a season ago, in which the Pirates led 43-6 at halftime.
CROSS COUNTRY: the Pirates cross country teams each won the West De Pere triangular meet on August 24, with Savannah Huben winning the girls’ race and Kyle Thieme finishing second for the boys.
Due to inclement weather, both teams had their August 30 meet at De Pere cancelled. No makeup date has been set at this point.
BOYS SOCCER: Bay Port got a 5-3 nonconference road victory over Fox Valley Lutheran on August 28. Senior Griffin Pecore had four goals and an assist in the win.
In a 2-1 loss to Sheboygan North on August 29, Pecore scored the only goal of the game for the Pirates on a penalty kick.
VOLLEYBALL: the Lady Pirates volleyball team got off to a good start by going 6-1 in their opening tournament of the year at UW-Oshkosh on August 22-23.
Bay Port got 2-0 victories over Campbellsport, Stevens Point Pacelli, Black River Falls, Waukesha North and Mosinee and a 2-1 victory over Pacelli again. The Pirates’ only loss in the tournament came to Hillsboro by a 2-0 margin.
Sophomore Brooke Clement had an impressive two days with her 45 kills and 49 digs, while senior Mady Schroeder led Bay Port with 67 total digs. Senior Maura McGinnity had 99 assists and 11 aces in her 15 sets of play to lead the team in both categories.
GIRLS GOLF: freshman golfer Jo Baranczyk continued her strong start to the season by tying for second at the FRCC meet on August 25 at the Highland Ridge Golf Course in De Pere.
Baranczyk’s score of 41 was just two shots behind Madi Winter’s 39, who took medalist honors. Courtney Koeberl (tied for 9th), Maddy Peters (tied for 17th) and Tori Grimm (25th) all helped the Lady Pirates finish fourth out of seven teams with their 193 total. De Pere (184), Green Bay Co-op (190) and Green Bay Notre Dame (192) all finished ahead of Bay Port.
Despite their fourth-place finish, the Pirates still remain tied for first atop the FRCC standings with De Pere after two FRCC meets.
On August 28, Baranczyk once again took home medalist honors at the Crusade Fore a Cure event at Maple Bluff Country Club in Madison. Baranczyk had three birdies and an eagle en route to a 2-over 76 to win by a stroke.
